Commemorative Activity Post

Today is the day we remember the fight between Mr Sherlock Holmes and Professor James Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls.

In honour of the occasion, we would like you to submit obituaries for some of the many characters who we encounter in the writings of Dr Watson.  Some, of course, meet their deaths during the stories, others will live on for many years until they too are taken by time.

Please post your obituaries as comments to this entry.  Everyone is welcome to comment, even if you are not a member.  It may be of assistance to our other readers if you indicate in the comment header where they may find your character.

Submissions are welcome not only today, but during the coming weeks.

For example, here is a recent submission to the Marylebone Monthly Illustrated.

Mr Alexander Holder (BERY)

It is with great regret the sudden death is announced of Mr Alexander Holder, of the banking firm of Holder & Stevenson, Threadneedle Street, London.  He had made a good recovery from the illness brought on by a series of shocks a few years ago, but his heart could not withstand the latest misfortune.

He will be greatly missed by his loving (and now no longer broke) son, his niece and her four or five children.

Professor Pressbury (The Creeping Man)

Yesterday the imminent Camfort physiologist Professor Pressbury was laid to rest. Upon failing to make a monkey out of himself, he went bananas and died of potassium overdose.

He's survived by a daughter Edith and a wolfhound Roy, who laments that his former master did, indeed, in the end, taste like chicken.

Excellent last line. And I'm relieved to hear he didn't get married to anyone.

Thank you. Yeah, 'confirmed bachelor' is probably the safest route for him and everyone else.

(The Speckled Band)

[identity profile] okapi1895.livejournal.com 2016-05-04 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
The reptilian world bit a fond farewell to one of its most distinguished members yesterday. A native of India, Mister No-Legs was a true Renaissance adder, for after putting a chequered youth beset by rogueish associations behind him, he went on to author two best-selling cookery books, launch a animal-friendly line of handbags, and take a silver-gilt medal in the Chelsea Flower Show for his horticultural masterpiece, so aptly named 'By the Banks of the River Ganges' (photo insert). Known for his forked tongue and sharp wit, he was often quoted as saying 'Biology is only a suggestion. One should never let a lack of limbs or external ears get in the way of a life well-lived. Or a good story."

Yeah, for one without feet, he was a real stand-up guy.

That's a great idea, and bravo for Mister No-Legs! I love, among the rest, animal-friendly line of handbags.

Thank you. I think he was savvy that way, turning everybody's admiration for his speckled skin into something profitable.

A wonderful chap. And what a profound quotation - so true, so true ^^

An excellent obituary all in all - he would have been proud.

Hee, hee. You just never know what some people's triggers are going to be. That's why you should always tag properly!

Mrs. Hudson's Peace of Mind

[identity profile] scfrankles.livejournal.com 2016-05-04 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Mrs. Hudson's peace of mind, after many years of patient suffering. There were many battles bravely borne: Mr. Holmes's experiments; Mr. Holmes's untidiness; Mr. Holmes's pretending to be dying. Mr. Holmes's pretending to be dead.

There will be a wake held at Baker Street tonight for all those who wish to attend. Mrs. Hudson will be remembering fondly happier times and toasting her late peace of mind in gin. Repeatedly.

I'm usually disdainful of obits that use the phrase 'lost their battle to' but in this case, I think it's wholly appropriate. Her mind fought the good fight, it was just no match for her. Kind of reminds you of a land war in Asia. *Cheers*
