Watson smiled at the young journalist. “And your next question, Miss Rushlow…?”

Miss Rushlow glanced down at her notes. “A great many readers have wondered why your descriptions of Inspector Lestrade varied so much, Doctor. I believe on separate occasions you compared him to a rat, to a ferret, and also to a bulldog. Is there an explanation for this?”

“Well, now. I suppose I can be honest at last after all these years.” Watson chuckled. “The truth is, I gave all our inspectors pseudonyms so as not to hinder their work! ‘Lestrade’ was actually used for three different men: Smith, Miller and Castleman.”

“Oh.” Miss Rushlow’s face fell. “So does that mean there wasn’t a particular inspector Mr. Holmes and you were friends with?”

“You’re thinking of the ‘Six Napoleons’ chap!” Watson nodded vigorously. “That was Inspector Charles Miller. Definitely the inspector Holmes and I were closest to.” He smiled fondly. “I always had the greatest of respect for old Ferret Features.”

“That… does seem apparent,” said Miss Rushlow.

It also saved Watson having to get the names right - one name covers them all.

I can absolutely accept this theory. Such a clever idea of sorting out another canon discrepancy. :)

Makes perfect sense. Also the change in command - and the change in respect for Holmes' methods - would match the evolution of crimefighting techniques at Scotland Yard.
