Fic: Newts, Nottle and Nell

Title: Newts, Nottle and Nell
Form/Word Count: 221B
Characters/Pairing: Dr Watson, Sherlock Holmes
Rating: G
Warning/Content: Holmes and Watson remember an old case

We were sitting quietly in 221B one evening.  I was dozing over my latest novel whilst Holmes was looking through one of his common place books, when suddenly he gave one of his barks of laughter.

“Now that was an odd case,” he said.

“Oh, which one was that?” I asked, surfacing from my half-slumber.

“The one where the thieves had hidden their silver in the lake and were prevented from retrieving it because one of the children from the house party was observing the pair of great crested newts which lived by the lake.”

I joined Holmes in his laughter.  “What was the child’s name?  That’s right, Gussy Fink-Nottle.  Didn’t it turn out that the younger son of the house was involved in the theft?”

“Yes.  And not just the son, but the wife too.  A second wife, of course.  Known to Lestrade in her earlier days as Slippery Nell.”

I thought for a moment.  “Perhaps I should write the case up some time.  I could call it Newts, Nottle, and Nell.”

“I hardly think that would be a title your editor would appreciate.  Nor would it be a good idea to write it at the moment.  My current case bears a number of similarities to that one.”

“Then I shall postpone my tale of theft foiled by amphibian behaviour.”

Victorian SH lets us see the childhood of Wodehouse's characters. (I had a two-year-old Reggie Jeeves mentioned in one story.)
