My dear Holmes:
Five weeks ago, I was welcoming our new reinforcements from the Indian Subordinate Medical Department at the [DELETED] C.C.S. when I was attacked – not by the Huns but by my heart, it having decided that a sixty-three-year-old man living in an extremely stressful environment was a choice target.
At that site supplies are scarce and medics with specialty training scarcer. Normally such an incident would be followed solely by a condolence telegram to the sufferer’s family. But by great good fortune one of our ISMD newcomers, Dr. Hiraj Laghari, is a heart specialist who recognised my symptoms and aided me before I fully realised what was happening. His immediate treatment and emergency operation saved my life.
When I regained consciousness in the recovery tent and thanked Dr. Laghari, he smiled and told me of his rough childhood in Bombay nearly forty years ago. That orphan never forgot the day a newly-arrived English soldier gave him a piece of fruit, an English soldier wearing the uniform of a doctor. That act inspired him to learn and study and become a man of medicine himself.
I will be coming home in two weeks. Once I set foot on Dover soil my wartime service is ended for good and all.
I consider myself thoroughly repaid for that banana.
