Fic: The Show Must Go On: G

Warning/Content: When a Punch & Judy man deserts his post, the Ferret steps in
“It was definitely a case of the show must go on,” Holmes said to Watson as they discussed the conclusion of his latest case over supper.
Watson, who had been occupied with two injured constables and had therefore missed the drama, said, “I’m fascinated.”
“Well, as you know,” Holmes began, “the gang had set up one of their members as a distraction, and he was therefore running a Punch & Judy stand, which had drawn the attention of a number of children, plus some of their accompanying adults. I can only assume he took fright, because partway through the performance he disappeared. This would, no doubt, have annoyed the gang, but even worse, as far as we were concerned, it meant there was much less chance of slipping into the building unobserved.”
“Yes, I can see the problem.”
“Fortunately, the Ferret is never one to turn down an opportunity, so he scurried over to the stall, and continued with the story. It wasn’t quite the traditional version, although from the comments he had made while still in my pocket, I don’t think he thought much of what the gang member was producing. Anyway, it certainly kept the attention of the children and drew a bigger crowd, so no-one complained.”
“Was it sufficient to allow Lestrade’s men to get into the building?”
“Absolutely. And there was the bonus that two of the gang members were so enthralled by the performance that they were still watching when Lestrade came out of the building and so he had them arrested as well.”
Watson laughed. “And where is the Ferret?”
“Several people threw coins into the hat at the end, which meant there was sufficient to buy several strands of embroidery thread. The Ferret is now instructing Mouselet and Aemelia as to the design for a new waistcoat.”
