I was catching up on the morning news from the newspaper when Holmes hurried into our rooms. I looked up, wondering whether he would be in need of any assistance, but he waved his hand and said, “Carry on, Watson, I’ve just come in to change.”
I had been planning on taking a walk in the afternoon, but a sudden heavy squall changed my mind and instead I retired to my comfortable armchair with my latest book. Once again, Holmes rushed in, having clearly been caught in the squall, and muttering, “Carry on,” he disappeared to find some dry clothing.
Holmes had not returned by the time Mrs Hudson was ready to serve supper. I told her I would eat, and Holmes would have to make do with cold food. I was partway through my meal, when for the third time that day Holmes appeared. I looked up, fork in hand, and again he motioned me to carry on. This time, however, he looked unusually pale, and I suspected he was wounded. Resigning myself to also having cold food, I stood up and said, “Holmes, you’d better let me take a look at your injury.”
“No, continue with your meal,” he said. “It will go cold otherwise.”
A firm voice behind him said, “Mr Holmes, kindly let the good doctor treat you, as I would prefer not to be removing blood stains from you room once more. I shall set his supper to keep warm whilst I heat up your own.”
I smiled my grateful thanks at Mrs Hudson and said, “Holmes, you are outnumbered. And for once you should accept defeat gracefully. Let me get my bag and I will attend to you in your room.”
He looked at me and said, with a slight quirk to his lips, “Carry on, Doctor.”
