Fic: The Telegram

Title: The Telegram
Form/Word Count: 100
Characters/Pairing: Dr Watson, Sherlock Holmes
Rating: G
Warning/Content: Holmes and Watson have received a telegram

It was not unusual for us to discover on our return to our rooms that a telegram had been received.  This one, however, made little sense to me.

BLAZING CURTAINS STOP UNTIDY ROOMS STOP YOUTHFUL INCURSIONS STOP GHASTLY EXPERIMENTS STOP INDECENT HOURS STOP NOISY VIOLIN PLAYING FULL STOP

“I presume this is from Mrs Hudson,” I said.  “But this sounds like a regular list of complaints.  Why has she bothered to send us a telegram about them when she’s on holiday?”

“I believe this is to warn us she is on her way home,” Holmes said.  “It also contains an additional instruction.  Let me show you.”

He rewrote the telegram and pointed to the first letter in each line.

BLAZING CURTAINS STOP
UNTIDY ROOMS STOP
YOUTHFUL INCURSIONS STOP
GHASTLY EXPERIMENTS STOP
INDECENT HOURS STOP
NOISY VIOLIN PLAYING FULL STOP

I believe this is what you call "subtext" :P

I love Mrs. Hudson's choice of phrasing - particularly "youthful incursions" and "ghastly experiments" ^___^
