Fic: The Country Weather Station: Rating: Teen

Title: The Country Weather Station
Length: 221b
Rating: Teen
Notes: for the monthly prompt. Holmes/Watson. Sussex Retirement 'verse. Accompaniment to my lengthier poem "Lines Written on a Country Weather Station."
Summary: Holmes returns to Sussex bearing a gift.

“Watson!”

“Hullo, stranger!”

“Might I tempt you from your luscious red beauties?”

“They aren’t red yet,” I grumbled.

“Or are you pricking out?”

“Holmes,” I opened the shed door, “as I’ve mentioned before, schoolboy jokes are not attractive in a man of your age, and tomatoes do not need pricking out!”

“Thank goodness,” replied Holmes devilishly. “Otherwise, I’d have some real competition.”

I kissed him.

Much too soon, he pulled away. “Come, I’ve a gift for you.”

“But it’s not my birthday,” I protested as he took me by the hand.

---

“Oh, it is a handsome specimen,” I exclaimed when I laid eyes on it, nested in soft wool in the crate.

“Walnut, brass, glass. Thermometer, barometer, hygrometer. The finest weather station in the land.”

“I agree.”

"Makes up for the additional night away?”

“It more than makes up. And I know just where it should go.”

“On the wall above the table we pilfered from the bookshop?”

“Exactly. Go tell the bees all your news. When I’m finished bathing, you can tell me.”

“You know me so well.”

“I do. Once we’ve put this handsome thing in its proper place, I might just put another handsome thing in its proper place.” I shot him a look that required no interpretation.

“Dear me,” murmured Holmes. “And it’s not even my birthday.”

I am fascinated by the idea of them pilfering a table.

And excellent innuendo.

Echoing Small Hobbit - I'm really taken with the idea of them pilfering the table ^___^ And "Once we’ve put this handsome thing in its proper place, I might just put another handsome thing in its proper place” is such a great line ^____^

And as always I am so impressed with your use of description - ...nested in soft wool in the crate. “Walnut, brass, glass. Thermometer, barometer, hygrometer. The finest weather station in the land.” It's beautiful and I can absolutely see the weather station.
