August Activity Post

This month’s activity is called:

Work & Play

And the idea behind it is to come up with ideas, in a couple of sentences, about work and play overlapping for our characters.

Some examples:

A locked room murder happens at the Diogenes Club, with the culprit having to be one of the members currently on the premises. Mycroft is finally able to enjoy solving a mystery all on his own without having to expend much energy.

Mrs. Hudson goes on a busman's holiday, helping out at a children's home. After putting up with her tenants, dealing with the behaviour of actual small boys is quite relaxing.

Miss Violet Smith, now Mrs. Cyril Morton and wealthy heiress, invents the first exercise bicycle. Whilst cycling you also power an attached pianola, so you have beautiful piano music as you pedal.

And my esteemed colleague informs me: Aemelia Vole is currently embroidering the Ferret's new waistcoat with stitches which say in Morse code 'No snacks'.

As always, you needn’t take part in this activity if you don’t wish to. Once you’re a member, you can post what and when you want—as long as you keep to the 500 words or less wordcount and the ACD Holmes ‘verse. AUs, crossovers and fusions are all permitted, as long as the characters remain essentially recognisable as the original ACD versions.

Please see the profile for the full posting guidelines!

Inspired by this Granada 'verse gif set from "The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax": http://granada-brett-crumbs.tumblr.com/post/176773566581/watson-wednesday-ง-ง

Watson always enjoys a small moment of happiness when his work with Sherlock Holmes, that is the cases, allow him to re-visit his rugby days by tackling matters (and, uh, people) with vigour. Holmes is also not un-appreciative of these moments.

In fact, Holmes has been known to set up the opportunity on occasions.

Yes, he is a man of action!

Once a fortnight Mrs Hudson helps out at a local tea room. Having people actually appreciate the tea, rather than forgetting about it and letting it get cold, is much appreciated.

Poor Mrs. Hudson. Unfortunately in my house, I am both tea maker and tea abandoner. So disappointed in myself :)

That is somewhat sad!

If she knows it is just Holmes by himself then she probably does - if Watson is there then she knows at least one cup will be drunk (probably).

Mycroft enjoys a long-distance chess match with Kaiser Wilhelm. No one but the two participants know that the stakes are rather high for a friendly game; if Mycroft loses England is subject to German rule. The opposite is true if the elder Holmes wins the match.

(It was either this or wipe out half of Europe's young men in a bloody war; Mycroft was fortuitous enough to suggest this during the furor over Archduke Ferdinand's assassination.)

Let's hope Mycroft wins. The Kaiser's treatment of subject people was even worse than the British Empire's.

The thing about egotistical dictators is, they THINK they're better than they actually are.

Wilhelm is good at chess, but not Mycroft-good. I'm pretty sure Mycroft is deliberately prolonging the game just to keep all Teutonic tempers in check when he finally does win.

A rather sad "what-if" considering how many European monarchs were champing at the bit to try out all their neat new aeroplanes and poison gases and bombs just when Ferdinand was dispatched.

"Mycroft?"

"...And, checkmate. I just saved a million lives, little brother."
