Once photography became ubiquitous, art no longer needed to be as picture-perfect. Holmes always availed himself of modern ideas (telephone, telegraph) when he wasn't coming up with his own improvements, so I can see an artist appreciating Impressionism rather than lamenting the loss of the old realism.
