You know, the prompt isn't the easiest for the non-broom cupboard inclined, but in my research I happened across the relationship between ACD and Houdini and spiritualism. I am reading a book about it now, The Witch of Lime Street. Very interesting. So this is Houdini's first visit to England in 1900. There's some legend that he did a handcuff trick at Scotland Yard and so doing won his gig at the Alhambra. Houdini published several works explaining the tricks of vaudeville performers and fake spiritualists and I think that knowledge would appeal to Holmes.
