Summary: Holmes and Watson recall a good turn they did.
Of course, Holmes noticed it at once, taking pride of place as it was on the cottage mantelpiece.
“What have we here?” he asked. “Surely this handsome ammonite did not wash up on our Sussex shores?”
“A gift from Cecil,” I said, holding up the letter that had accompanied the gift.
Holmes smiled as he took up the fossil, then dropped into his armchair. “You know in many of our efforts it is up for debate whether the end result was, ultimately, for good or for bad, but I feel that recommending Cecil for that job, the job of cleaning and sorting Nathan Garrideb’s collections, was one of the best things we ever did.”
“But it was mere chance, Holmes. We didn’t know that of the three Irregulars we recommended, he would take such a liking to the task that he would apply himself to actual study, rather than picking pockets and purses, and eventually become highly-placed in the British Museum.”
“Just so. Nevertheless…”
“Nevertheless, we gave fortune an opportunity to do its work, and a young man to find his vocation.” I smiled. “And he has not forgotten us.”
“That’s true.” Holmes turned the ammonite over in his hand. “Do you know what this puts me in mind of?”
“That we’re quickly becoming fossils.”
“No. Let’s have a nice bathe!”
