Weird to think of a time when chicken would have been more expensive than mutton or beef, but it's been that way for a while. In Samuel Pepys' diary in late 1661, he's happy that he's doing so well in his work that he and his wife can afford to eat a pullet (young hen) for Sunday dinner.
