“Now then, Mrs. Watson,” beamed the new vicar. “What have you decided your talk for the bishop’s visit is going to be about? Oh! Mr. Holmes, of course!”

Mary smiled politely. “No. You see, he is actually more my husband’s frien—”

“Naturally, naturally.” The vicar raised a finger. “So a talk about being a doctor’s wife? The treatment of stains? The running of a household?”

“No, I—”

“Oh, being a soldier’s daughter in India!”

“No.” Mary smiled a little more tensely. “The talk will actually be based on a little informal study I did some years ago. The social development of a child from age five to age eight.”

“Ah, children.” The vicar beamed at her again. “You ladies are so endearingly predictable in your interests.”

Watson came out of his surgery and smiled at his wife. “Thank you again for helping out, Mary. Especially as it meant you had to cancel your talk.”

“Always happy to assist, dear!” Mary looked up from the reception desk. “And I… didn’t cancel the talk actually.”

Watson looked surprised. “No?”

“No. Mr. Holmes said he would present it as ‘Mrs. Wilson’. Well, you know how keen we ladies are to show off a new frock.”

Mary looked somewhat sheepish but was grinning nonetheless.

“Just something predictable for the vicar to explain to the bishop.”

Well done, Mary. I'm sure the bishop will be fascinated by Mrs Wilson's talk!

It was when Mrs. Wilson began to earnestly explain the differences in blood spray depending on how the killing blow was struck (before a petrified audience) that the vicar began to reconsider.

Nicely done...I do hope “Mrs Wilson” is invited back and the bishop is made of stern stuff.
