Thanks. Holmes has always relied on all his senses ("the dog that did nothing"), but perhaps has bumped up the non-sight ones a bit to match Watson's perception of home these days.

The title was a complete accident - I didn't know the pigeon was speckled till Holmes described it, and during the release of "the speckled bird" I stared at the phrase that had just handed me the title.
