“Excellent,” Holmes replied. “That was the effect I was aiming for.”
“Yes,” I said thoughtfully, “the man you exposed with the simple expedient of a sponge and some water.”
“Correct. But why are you labouring the point?”
“If you’d looked out of the window instead of concentrating on your make-up, you would have seen it is currently pouring with rain. At this rate you won’t reach the end of the street before your make-up starts to run!”
