The sound of footsteps came clumping downstairs and then the door to 221’s kitchen was flung open with a bang. Mrs. Turner looked up to see Mrs. Hudson standing in the doorway, a face like thunder and cheeks covered in soot.

There was a pregnant pause.

Mrs. Turner tentatively raised an eyebrow.

Mrs. Hudson scowled and glanced up at the ceiling.

Mrs. Turner nodded. She looked towards the fire burning in the stove.

Mrs. Hudson nodded in return, and jerked her head towards the kitchen curtains.

Mrs. Turner sighed.

She turned to look at the kettle.

However, Mrs. Hudson merely narrowed her eyes.

Mrs. Turner looked towards the fruitcake.

Mrs. Hudson frowned.

Mrs. Turner looked at the nearly-empty bottle on the shelf, and raised both eyebrows in inquiry.

“Oh, for God’s sake,” roared Mrs. Hudson. “Stop asking stupid questions and start pouring!”

Mrs. Turner laughed, and picked up the gin.
